- Abstract
The German Longitudinal Election Study (GLES) is an extensive study that examines the voting behavior of Germans. It was launched in 2009 and is conducted by the GESIS - Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences. The GLES provides high-quality data on federal, state, and European elections in Germany and enables a long-term perspective for national and international research. For the 2021 federal election, extensive surveys were conducted among eligible voters and candidates to enable detailed analyses of political attitudes and voting behavior. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the surveys were conducted using a mixed-mode design, which included both online and written questionnaires. In total, over 8,500 eligible citizens were surveyed. Starting in spring 2022, participants of the 2021 GLES cross-section, along with individuals from two samples, will be interviewed online up to twice a year to examine developments in political attitudes and behaviors between elections. The GLES continuously works on further developing its research data offerings and promoting open science in social science research on elections and attitudes.
