- Abstract
Bentonites must meet some standards (such as swelling, viscosity, filtration loss values) in order to be used in industry. There are bentonite deposits that provide these properties and are used without any processing. However, many bentonite deposits do not have the desired properties. In this study, activation studies were carried out with soda and MgO in order to improve the industrial properties of Kalecik bentonite sample. In the findings, it was observed that the cation exchange capacity (KDK), swelling, viscosity, liquid limit values of the bentonite samples activated with soda were partially improved (KDK 89.67 meq/100 g, swelling 16 ml, viscosity 8.5 cP, liquid limit 201%). It was observed that the filtration loss value (26.8 ml) did not change at the beginning, however, it increased with increasing additive ratios. Similar findings (KDK 70.65 meq/100 g, swelling 15 ml, viscosity 8 cP, liquid limit 211) were obtained in experiments with MgO additive. In experiments using MgO additive, it was observed that the filtration loss values increased more than the raw sample. The lowest filtration loss was found to be 29.2 ml. Changes in physical properties were associated with the increase of Na+ and MgO+2 ions in bentonite unit layers as a result of activation.
