- Abstract
Dr. John Paxton, a renowned ichthyologist, passed away in 2023 after a distinguished 50-year career. He was a curator at the Australian Museum and made significant contributions to the field of ichthyology. Dr. Paxton played a crucial role in expanding and organizing the museum's ichthyology collection, which became the largest fish collection in the Southern Hemisphere. He also mentored students, taught ichthyology courses, and co-authored important reports on threatened species conservation. Dr. Paxton's research focused on various fish families, and he described numerous new species and genera. He collaborated widely and received numerous honors and awards for his contributions to the field.
