- Abstract
Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is prevalent in childhood and persists in up to 80% of cases into adulthood, significantly affecting individuals' functioning. Characterized by inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity, ADHD is associated with a higher incidence of overweight and obesity, especially in adults. Conversely, obesity can exacerbate ADHD symptoms, creating a cycle of symptomatic feedback. Common genetic, neural, and behavioral mechanisms between ADHD and obesity have been discussed, including studies pointing to shared neurobiological and genetic alterations. Multi-professional interventions addressing both ADHD symptoms and eating behaviors may benefit individuals with this comorbidity. Adequate treatment of ADHD, including psychotherapy and medication, can reduce impulsivity and improve adherence to weight loss programs. Considering the increasing prevalence of obesity and its consequences for public health, it is crucial to diagnose and treat ADHD properly, especially in patients with obesity. This article reviews the literature on the relationship between obesity and ADHD in adults, highlighting the need for appropriate multi-professional attention to this comorbid relationship so that more assertive and beneficial interventions can be made for individuals with ADHD and obesity.
