- Abstract
Amazon river prawn (Macrobrachium amazonicum) is a fishing resource commercially exploited throughout in the Pará State, being sold at fairs, markets, supermarkets and stores specializing in fish. This product generates work and income for a significant number of people, such as fishermen, intermediaries, employees of processing establishments and traders. The objective of this study was to analyze the commercialization of Amazon river prawn in the Pará State, aiming to identify the products offered by regions and to analyze the retailers perceptions in terms of opportunities to stimulate consumption. In the period of February and August 2019, field observations were carried out at 24 commercialization locations and 56 interviews with retailers in the municipalities of Altamira, Belém, Breves, Cametá, Santarém and Tucuruí. Subsequently, the products identified had their procurement process evaluated assessed for income, while retailers had their opinions presented through descriptive statistics. It was found that the products offered in all regions were: alive, fresh whole, fresh peeled, cooked and salted whole and cooked and salted peeled. Região Metropolitana de Belém was the only one where frozen peeled shrimp was available, as well as products certified by the State Inspection Service (SIE). The retailers' discourse showed the existence and the difference between the harvest periods in the regions, in addition to the need to improve the classification of the product by size. It was concluded that the most viable way to stimulate the consumption of Amazon river prawn would be the regularity in the offer of products in the large category, which cannot be provided by fishing and presents itself as an opportunity for aquaculture.
