- Abstract
Occupational Therapy in educational contexts has been operating based on multiple perspectives. One of them emphasizes academic performance, which has been the focus of occupational therapists studying education as a human occupation. This study aimed to understand how the occupational repertoire of students in the final years of elementary school interacts with academic performance. The method employed was a quantitative, cross-sectional, observational, and analytical research design. Data collection involved the use of instruments such as the Occupation and Time Use Diary to catalog the occupational repertoire, and the School Performance Test II to assess fundamental skills in reading, writing, and arithmetic. Results revealed that out of the 78 students at the research site, 55 (70.5%) participated, constituting a statistically significant sample within established parameters for reliability (90%) and margin of error (6%). The majority of participants had an occupational repertoire consisting of four to six occupations. In discussing the results, the relationship between the occupational repertoire and the interpretation of academic performance indicated that all overall mean raw scores and percentiles, with a single exception, increased proportionally with the number of occupations performed by students. In conclusion, engagement in occupations showed a direct relationship with students' academic performance. In other words, a greater variety of occupations was associated with better academic performance scores. These findings underscore the importance of occupational therapy in promoting a diverse range of activities to enhance students' academic development.
