Central Asia between the Ottoman and the Soviet Worlds.
- Authors
KHALID, ADEEB
- Abstract
The article explores the ways in which late Ottoman and early Soviet models of political, social, and cultural reform came together to inform radicalism and nationalism in Central Asia among post-Ottoman Muslims. The author begins by describing the rise of a public space, largely characterized by a Turcophone press, that connected Muslim intellectuals in both the Ottoman and Russian Empires. The ways in which the Ottoman state model influenced the Emirate of Bukhara (in modern day Uzbekistan) are then explained. Bukhara's incorporation into the Soviet Union as the Bukharan People's Soviet Republic (BNSR) is detailed as well.
