- Abstract
Pope Benedict XVI is a person who polarized not only as a theologian. Media coverage also remained ambivalent from the time of the pontiff's election until his death. While he inspired an audience of millions after his inauguration, critical voices predominated at the end of his life. Using selected examples, this article addresses the development of papalcoverage in Germany- from the initialeuphoriaofthe media, throughthe scandals, to the death of Benedict XVI. During his tenure as pope, Joseph Ratzinger was always allocated a wide space in the German media landscape. Observations indicate: After the initial euphoria, over time, increasing media skepticism and criticism become apparent.
