- Abstract
The i-STAT Blood gas - Electrolyte - System EG7+ consists of a) a disposable plastic cartridge containing a set of highly miniaturized sensors to which the blood sample is introduced, b) the 'Portable Clinical Analyzer' to which the cartridge is connected after being filled and which performs the transportation and heating of the calibration solution and the sample, the signal transduction and the generation and storage of results. The analytical evaluation revealed that precision and accuracy of the blood gas and electrolyte sensors are very good and results are highly comparable to those measured with conventional analyzers. The conductometrical haematocrit, however, may only serve as a rough estimate to detect severe deviations. The practicability of the system is excellent, blood clotting cannot create any technical problems. The availability of blood gas and electrolyte results 2 minutes after sampling without any decrease in analytical quality must be regarded as an important progress.
