- Abstract
Introduction: Major depressive disorder is a complex disorder with an increased frequency among psychiatric disorders and is recognized as a disability worldwide. Anxiety and depression are commonly encountered clinical conditions in cancer patients that complicate their course and treatment. Case presentation: We present the case of a 77-year-old female patient admitted to a psychiatric service in which signs and symptoms of Major Recurrent Depressive Disorder - Severe Depressive Episode overlapped with the clinical presentation of Cholangiocarcinoma, making it difficult to diagnose the oncological disease. Discussion: Both depressive disorders and cancer disease are endemic and frequently comorbid. Recognition and diagnosis of oncologic disease in patients diagnosed with major depressive disorder can be challenging because of the similarity of multiple symptoms found in both clinical entities. In the presented case the differential diagnosis of depression is made with other psychiatric disorders or medical conditions, but the symptoms alone cannot help the differential diagnosis. Conclusions: Cholangiocarcinoma is a relatively rare malignant tumour with a poor prognosis. Patients with cholangiocarcinoma have a higher risk of developing depression and half of them reported symptoms of severe depression, which is associated with poor quality of life and increased mortality risk.
