- Title
Thermodynamics: It's Not Rocket Science.
- Authors
Lstiburek, Joseph W.
- Abstract
The article focuses on the laws of thermodynamics and explains that they are fairly fundamental and basic. In particular, the second law that moisture goes from warm to cold, from more to less, air goes from a higher pressure to a lower pressure, and gravity acts down is discussed. Problems with the U.S. Space Shuttle shedding foam from the external tank are highlighted to explain how the laws of thermodynamics have been forgotten. Also, the example of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) supplying trailers to New Orleans, Louisiana, which has a hot and humid climate is explained in the context of thermodynamics. The trailers all have an interior vapor barrier and are lined with gypsum board and wrapped with vinyl facings, resulting in mold.
