- Abstract
Study Design: Descriptive Study Objectives: To review, from the physiotherapy perspective, clinical guidelines developed for the management of low back pain. Methods: A search of all available library databases and trial databases at the University of South Australia and of the Internet using Google, WebWombat, Webcrawler and Dogpile search engines was undertaken. The expanded terms “clinical guidelines”, “physiotherapy” and “low back pain” were used. Guidelines were included if they were in full text, fully referenced, and in English. Results: Nine eligible guidelines were reviewed. They differed in the ways in which they were constructed and in their description of strength of evidence, diagnostic criteria, interventions, and measures of outcome. Conclusions: In response to their findings the authors provided a list of good guideline features; clinical decision-making systems, clinical care recommendations, and best practice management strategies, eg. patient handouts and clinical indicators for quality improvement. They pointed out that guidelines offer access to structured collections of research findings but suggested that further work is required to develop physiotherapy specific guidelines.
