- Title
Archival History and Forms of Surprise: Unraveling Italian American Newspaper Advertisements.
- Authors
SALTER, SARAH
- Abstract
This article uses early twentieth-century advertisements from Il Progresso Italo-Americano to complicate a long-standing binary in Italian American studies between the conservativism of cultural elites (prominenti) and the revolutionary perspectives of political radicals. In a formalist analysis buttressed by historical attention, the essay argues for the value of one exceptional image by proposing a method of formal reading that evokes translation's etymological approach
