- Abstract
Introduction: Substance use is serious risk to the health of workers. The aims of this study were to identify the subgroups of workers on the basis of substance use and assess the role of anxiety, sensation seeking and ADHD on the membership of participants in each latent class. Methods: This cross sectional study was performed on 2434 workers. The sample was selected through random cluster sampling from Kaveh Industrial City. All workers completed five sets of checklists and questionnaires. Data analysis was performed using latent class analysis. Results: Four latent classes were identified; namely, 1) Non user (80.1%), 2) Tobacco user (15.2%), Tobacco and opium user (3.7%) and, poly substance user (1.0%). After adjusting for other studied covariates, having ADHD increased the odds of membership in tobacco user class (OR=2.41) and poly substance user class (OR= 2.96) compared to non-user class. Also, having anxiety significantly increased the odds of membership in tobacco user class (OR=2.12) and poly substance user class (OR=2.21) in comparison to non-user class. Finally sensation seeking significantly increased the odds of membership in tobacco user class (OR= 7.30), tobacco and opium user class (OR=1.69) and poly substance user class (OR= 6.95) compared to non-user class. Conclusion: Results indicated that 4.7% of the workers fell under tobacco and opium user and poly substance user classes. Focusing on treatment of ADHD with considering other comorbid factors such as anxiety and sensation seeking may be helpful in designing and executing effective programs to reduce of substance use among workers.
