- Abstract
Introduction: Food security and physical and financial access to ample and wholesome nutrients for the fulfillment of the nutritional needs are among the most basic needs of human beings and are regarded as a priority in the development objectives of all countries. This study aimed at an epidemiological review of food security in the healthcare centers affiliated with Mashhad University of Medical Sciences . Method: This is a cross-sectional study of the food security, BMI, physical activity, education, smoking, hypertension, domestic violence and psychological status among 60625 mothers who referred to healthcare centers affiliated with Mashhad University of Medical Sciences between 2017 and June 2019. Food security was measured using the HFIAS scale. The relationships of the variables with food security were investigated using multinominal logistic regression . Results: The mean age of the participants was 42.01±14.3 years. Among the participants, 64.7% (N=39209) had food security; 25.3% (N=15321) of the participants suffered from mild food insecurity; 6.7% (N=4044) suffered from moderate insecurity and 3.4% (N=2051) suffered from severe food insecurity. Moreover, food insecurity was significantly associated with BMI, education, age and psychological status score, and smoking (OR=2.1) and lack of physical activity (OR=1.9) were associated with an increase in the odds of severe food insecurity. Conclusion: As the results of this study indicate, most households enjoy good food security.
