- Abstract
A recent paper by Hanci et al examines the gender distribution on editorial boards for toxicology journals and its impact on journal growth. The study finds that the United States is close to achieving gender balance on editorial boards, with 49.7% of editors being female. In contrast, European toxicology journals have significantly lower representation, with only 15.5%–15.6% female editors. The authors also note that the percentage of female representatives in editorial positions seems to have stagnated. The study suggests that gender representation should be a defined priority for toxicology journals and highlights the positive correlation between the number of female editorial board members and journal impact factor. The authors of the paper, as female senior editors of a pharmacology and toxicology-related European journal, comment on the need for change and urge for increased awareness and efforts to achieve a more balanced gender composition in scientific journals. They also provide recommendations for improving journal quality and reputation, such as increasing the visibility of female members on editorial boards and including both men and women in nominations for journal-based prizes. The authors emphasize the importance of gender balance in the editorial room to reflect a balanced scientific community and to provide role models for female scientists.
