Making the Poor Count.
- Authors

- Abstract
The article discusses the development of Aadhaar, a Unique Identification Number (UID) biometrics system in India that aims to upgrade the country's welfare schemes. UID is described as the brainchild of the government agency called the Unique Identification Authority of India headed by Nanan Nilekani, who used to be the chairman of Infosys Technologies. Advocates of the program claim that UID will benefit the poor, who are said to be excluded by many of the Indian government's welfare programs. Potential benefits of UID in the administration and effectiveness of the Public Distribution System (PDS) and the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) are also explored.
