- Abstract
The article focuses on the role of science and technology in the transition from a centrally-planned economy to a market economy in Central and Eastern European countries. The northern tier of the countries, East Germany, Poland, Czechoslovakia and Hungary, took part in the intellectual brilliance of the European Enlightenment during the 17th and 18th centuries. It notes that with the transition, heavy industries were created with little regard for the environment.
