- Abstract
This article analyzes the relationship between the management practices of school principals and student achievement in six high schools. Perceptions of principals (N = 17), staff (N = 20), and students (N = 1,560) were linked to the students' overall achievement in French and mathematics. Thirty-five management practices and school characteristics are associated with the achievement of the students. Some practices and school characteristics are positively linked to academic achievement and high proportions of students with good results, such as management aimed at creating a positive learning environment for the students. Other practices, such as monitoring results and promoting pedagogical approaches, are linked to a low proportion of students who have poor results or who fail. Management practices appear to play a mediating role between school experience in the classroom and achievement.
