- Abstract
A poetry criticism is presented for the collection "The Book of the Dead" by Muriel Rukeyser. The 20-poem cycle concerns the Union Carbide and Carbon Corporation's duplicity in its 1930s excavation project at Gauley Bridge, West Virginia, which claimed 476 lives. The article shows the poet's concern with the theme of transformation as she explores the impact of science, industry and literature on the valuing of human life while also fusing public documents with private thoughts.
