- Abstract
An essay is presented in which the authors reflect on the impact of writer and teacher Laurie Ricou's teaching on their engagements with literature and place. Topics discussed include his book "Salal: Listening for the Northwest Understory" in which he focused on a glossy Pacific Northwest understory plant, his unique approach to literary study and their attempts to show how Ricou's teaching and scholarship have influenced their own thinking, writing and research.
