- Abstract
Breastfeeding affects the nutritional status, immune, cognitive and emotional development of children, and has implications for maternal health. Objective: To assess knowledge of mothers about breastfeeding. Methods: Descriptive study, held in a maternity hospital in the city of São Mateus, ES. Results: 51,7% didn't breastfeed earlier and 75.5% initiating breastfeeding more than one hour after birth, 71.5% didn't have any difficulty to breastfeed, 63.8% didn't receive instruction about breastfeeding. 83.6% of mothers know the period of exclusive breastfeeding. Most of them unknown the possible complications of breastfeeding, the preparation of the breasts, correct breastfeeding positioning and latch-on. Conclusion: the postpartum women showed a low knowledge of breastfeeding.
