Mechanisms for fulfilling equity targets at the elite Australian university: a review of scholarship and practice.
- Authors

- Abstract
This short discussion considers the effectiveness of current methods to widen equity participation employed by the research-intensive Group of Eight universities in Australia. In particular, we take aim at the government initiated Educational Access Scheme (EAS) and forward the case for universities to re-assess its usefulness as a widening access tool. Government data is highlighted to bring to light shortcomings in the use of EAS. As an alternative, the authors posit that a more transparent method of identifying disadvantaged students for application-free bonus points is required, while offering a broad set of variables that should be appraised if a new method is to be explored.
