- Abstract
An essay is presented on modern architectural historiography which examines the impact pollution caused by the Industrial Revolution, such as smog and acid rain, had on building material choices of architects in cities in the late 19th century. The author examines ways in which the durability and aesthetic value of several building materials including cement, iron, and terra-cotta were affected by environmental pollutants.
