- Abstract
The article discusses the oil on canvas work of Rosa Bonheur titled "Plowing in Nivernais" which is the cover of the issue. It offers a background information about Bonheur, whose interest in art was inspired by his painter and sculptor father Raimond. She developed fascination for animals after attending horse fairs and farmers' markets to observe animals' emotions and behavior. Her style was regarded as part of the realist movement of the mid-1800s. About "Plowing in Nivernais," it is believed that the painting was based on the novel "The Devil's Pool," which centers on the displacement of peasants by industrialization. The setting of the painting was Nivernais, France where the painter observed the animals and the land, the people at work, and the agricultural tools.
