The cost of apparel in seventeenth-century England, and the accuracy of Gregory King.
- Authors

- Abstract
Articles of clothing and cost of apparel can also be indicators of social levels in seventeenth-century England. In 1688, Gregory King, created a table he called the "annual consumption of apparel" which lays out the annual new additions to the stock of clothing in the country. Though it is uncertain as to why King drew up the table, or the methods he used to do so, it is known that King was a polymath, an eclectic who is obsessed with figures and numbers. King, in his table, listed the types of garments in various groups, estimated the total quantities, and identified the values for each type.
