- Abstract
"Canada's Place Names & How to Change Them" by Lauren Beck explores the colonial appropriation of Indigenous place names and the misrepresentation of marginalized communities in Canada's toponymic policy and practice. The book addresses various aspects of identity policy represented through place names, including Indigenous names, gender, disability, migration, ethnicity, and race. Beck analyzes problematic place names on official maps and proposes tangible solutions for changing them to create a more inclusive toponymic landscape. The book also highlights the importance of challenging Western place naming practices and recognizing the unique conceptualizations of space and landscape by different communities. It suggests the need to consider the naming rights of nonhuman beings and animals in Indigenous naming traditions. Overall, the book raises important questions and addresses societal problems related to Canada's place names, advocating for a more inclusive society.
