- Title
The Cultural and Ecclesial Situation 1964 to 1967: Paving the Way for Dissent From Church Teaching on Contraception.
- Authors
May, William E.
- Abstract
The article focuses on the cultural and ecclesial situation from 1964 to 1967 which paved the way for contraception acceptance in the U.S. It states that the American secular culture had warmly embraced contraception due to the endorsement of the Lyndon Johnson government on programs of contraception and sexual revolution associated with the 1960s. It adds that Catholic legislators endorsed contraceptive use provided, as advised by Cardinal Richard Cushing, they do not represent the church.
