- Abstract
This study of England and Scotland's great gardens, presented here in a few examples chosen partly as representative of one or more of the traditions of English gardening, partly to please the author's own taste, with the gardens of Tresco Abbey. In the last section of this book we have taken a glance at what, socially and economically, are the most important gardens in Britain, the little ones of the villages and suburbs and cities. The design of these owes much more, probably, to the traditions of semi-formal gardening than to those of romantic woodland gardening. It is obviously bound to be so, for the scale of these millions of small gardens is quite unsuitable for anything else. But there is another and equally important point to be considered: the future of great gardens in Britain. That many of the older ones and some not so old have come into the hands of the National Trust means that they will be preserved.
