- Abstract
The banking house Gebr. Bethmann in Frankfurt am Main was a family business that faced a crisis during the First World War and struggled until the 1950s. Baron Moritz von Bethmann became an instrument of the National Socialists and implemented their policies in associations, societies, and companies. Despite his political involvement, he was unable to successfully manage his business or preserve his family fortune. The bank was eventually liquidated. The article also describes the sale of the bank's headquarters to the city of Frankfurt am Main in 1941 and the connections of the Bethmann family to other banks and companies during the time of National Socialism. Moritz von Bethmann was a member of the Rotary Club and held various supervisory board mandates. Despite his connections to the Nazi regime, he was unable to successfully conduct his banking business.
