- Title
European Cartels and Technology Transfer: the experience of the rayon industry, 1920 to 1940.
- Authors
Cerretano, Valerio
- Abstract
The article discusses European international cartels in the rayon industry during the early 20th century. According to the author, these cartels were technology-sharing cartels and they played an important role in technology transfer. It is suggested that they lessened barriers to entry into the industry by regulating members' patent and commercial policies and allowed leading firms to influence the direction of technology flows. Details related to the firms Courtaulds, Vereingte Gnanzstoff-Fabriken (VGF), and Comptoir des Textiles Artificiels (Comptoir), are presented. Other topics include output growth, licensing, and economic nationalism.
