- Abstract
This research is based on two premises. The first is that retail investors establish a consumer relationship with financial institutions when they purchase fixed and/or variable income products. The second premise is that the socialization processes of these investor-consumers influence and construct decisions about the purchase of investment products. The objective of this article was to identify elements of the subjects' trajectories - using concepts from Bourdieu's sociology - and associate them with the use of financial resources. To achieve this, interviews were conducted with individual investors, followed by content analysis. In addition to revealing the influence of parents on money management, the interviews indicated that investors with a preference for variable income share financial market experiences in interpersonal relationships and focus on accumulating financial information capital; respondents with a preference for fixed income are not interested in market dynamics and rely on extra-economic issues when choosing financial products.
