Description of RBF as a rare, systemic illness caused by infection with streptobacillus moniliformis which is found in the nasal and oropharyngeal flora of rats; Potential for human infection to result from a bite or scratch from an infected or colonized rat, handling an infected rat, or ingestion of food or water contaminated with infected rat excreta; Description of RBF symptoms; Details of two RBF case reports: a 52 year-old woman in Florida and a 19-year-old woman in Washington.
