- Abstract
The Ottoman period bazaars are located in specific areas of the cities due mainly to the influence of the Turkish Middle Asia and the Islamic urbanism culture. Locations of bazaars within the city is not selected indiscriminately. Some factors; such as proximity to castle or city walls, main roads and cultural areas, played important role in the site selection. Therefore, the Ottoman period city bazaars developed in the areas that were affected from at least one or all of these factors. Not only the bazaars a trade area, but were also a system containing a lot of production and social activities. Therefore, the bazaar system created the center of city life. In this system, the distribution of bazaars and markets were in a certain form. The central mosque (grand mosque) and bedesten (grand bazaar) constituted the center of the bazaars system. Around this center, trade areas are located in a circle form. These trade areas has also some functions such as accommodation, recreation, worship and personal services facilities. The production areas constituted the outer belt of the bazaar system. The bazaars system separated distinctly from the residence areas.
