- Authors
YEAGER, KEVIN
- Abstract
The article discusses the historical significance of the personal correspondence and letters of Reverend John Elder, a Scottish immigrant and resident of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania between 1738 and 1792. Particular focus is given to an analysis of ways in which the content of the letter reveals the struggle of Scots-Irish immigrants in establishing their ethnic identity as both immigrants and colonists, as well as their contentious relations with Native American groups in the region. Elder's letters with various government officials, including Pennsylvania Governor John Penn and Colonel Joseph Shippen, are discussed.
