- Abstract
A large assemblage of fragmented mammal, fish, bird and reptile bone was recovered from 21KC13 during archaeological investigations in 1997. The data recovery project was conducted by the Midwest Archeological Center of the National Park Service prior to structural rehabilitation of the historic Rainy Lake City Saloon. Fish are most prevalent by the zooarchaeological measure of Number of Identified Specimens, although most of the fish bone is too fragmented for species identification. Mammals are most prevalent by Minimum Number of Individuals, with identifications including moose, beaver, snowshoe hare, black bear, wolf or dog, and lynx or bobcat. The significance of the faunal assemblage lies mainly in the stratigraphic isolation of an Archaic component. The other components (Woodland and Historic) are mixed, but still provide valuable information about resource use and local environment throughout the period of site occupation. Modified bone artifacts include a harpoon tip and possible beads made from fish vertebrae.
