- Abstract
Zekat is a worship as regards the possession and a pretension with financial and social aspects. It is a way of showing gratitude towards the benefaction of Allah. It leads to sympathy and approach among the rich and the poor. It eliminates the feel of jealousy. One should be wealthy in order to be in charge of zekat. And, the level of being wealthy is to have determined possessions apart from the basic needs. The one who has essential need does not have to give zekat. Basic initial needs may vary according to the positions of the individuals. However, one should avoid of luxury and waste. Otherwise, expenses apart from the needs are included to the average level of being wealthy. Prophet Mohammed indicates the average level of wealthiness by taking the circumstances of his period. Yet, when especially the criteria related to the gold and the silver are taken into account, we can say that the people who are not regarded as rich may be obliged to give zekat. Therefore, by taking the poverty line into consideration, the minimal amount of yearly expenses of a family apart from the basic initial needs can be the criterion of wealthiness.
