- Abstract
Sheikh Bedreddin, whose full name ise "Bedreddîn Mahmûd b. İsrâil b. Abdülazîz", was born around the year 760/1359 in the Simavna Fort that was conquered by his father. Since his father was a qâdî, Sheikh Bedreddin was called "Simavna Kadısıoğlu" as well. His mother, the daughter of the Greek commander of the above-mentioned fort, was named Melek after her conversion to İslam. Sheikh Bedreddin took lessons from various scholars in such educational centres as Edirne, Bursa, Konya, Mecca, and Cairo. This process of intensive learning contributed a lot to his high level of knowledge as well as his versatile profile. Although there are various suggestions, we are deprived of complete information about his understanding of Sufism, which is believed to depend on Sunnism. Considering the controversial information cited in the sources and, ideological discourses based on prejudices, the claims that Sheikh Bedreddin had some heretical believes and rebelled against the Sultan of the time, should be taken with suspicion and care. However, it is known that he was found guilty of rebellion and hanged in 820/1417. In his two works of fiqh titled Letâifü'l-işârât and et-Teshîl Sheikh Bedreddin seems to have adopted the similiar form and method to İbnü's-Sâatî's book Mecmeu'l-bahreyn. His other work devoted to fiqh is Câmiu'l-fusûleyn, which was written in chapters unlike the previous ones. All the boks mentioned reflect the characteristics of their own time in terms of language, type and content. They also show that Sheikh Bedreddin was, at least, a faqih having a level of "ashâb-ı tercih" in the Hanefi sect. However, some of his ideas about "ijtihad" are criticized of being incongruous with the traditional method follewed by this sect.
