- Abstract
Purpose The landscape of the long-term care (LTC) nursing home has increased in complexity in recent years with little change to resources available to nursing home staff. These conditions can lead to the transfer of residents to the emergency department (ED) for issues that could safely be cared for at a less acute level of care. Complex issues arising around infusion therapy through peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs) is one identified cause. The purpose of this quality improvement intervention was to increase knowledge and resources available to LTC nursing home staff about proper care and maintenance of PICCs. Methods A three-hour PICC Education Day workshop was presented to staff of seven LTC nursing homes in partnership with a university teaching hospital. Results The results showed improvement in knowledge, confidence, and comfort level post intervention as evidenced by a positive change in outcomes testing on both multiple choice questionnaire and Likert scale items. Significance was demonstrated on items related to troubleshooting common line issues at p ≤ 0.05 on the Wilcoxon signed ranks test. Conclusions Continuous quality improvement initiatives are an effective method to increase knowledge and skills of LTC nursing home staff to deal with common PICC issues within the resident’s home.
