- Abstract
The failed siege of Gibraltar by the second Count of Niebla, in 1436, was narrated in chronicles as well as in different versions of a romance, in Pero Tafur's book of travel and in an episode of Juan de Mena's El Laberinto de Fortuna. But these versions of the tragic events show more differences than similarities. Mena's poetry focuses on the Count's Christian and Chivalrous values, yet it seems to obliquely reproduce a certain officious version, spread by Pero Tafur, that holds the Count responsible for the disaster owing to his lack of prudence. The "re-scenification" criterion can help elucidate cases like these, not to establish the historical facts, but to trace their influence in the process of fictionalization and discourse construction.
