- Abstract
Aim: To determine the orthodontic knowledge, factors influencing orthodontic treatment seeking decision, utilization and awareness of fake braces among Manjung district teenagers. Material and methods: A cross-sectional study involving Form 6 students, aged between 18 and 20 years old, with or without orthodontic experience was conducted at 5 Manjung district secondary schools in 2017. Self-administered questionnaires were used to capture: socio-demographics, orthodontic knowledge, factors influencing orthodontic treatment seeking decision, utilization and awareness of fake braces. Results: A total of 431 students participated in this study. Only 5 out of 9 questions regarding knowledge on orthodontic service were answered correctly by more than 85% of respondents. For 191 respondents who have ever thought of wearing braces, aesthetic (94.8%) was the main factor. Among 431 respondents, 194 (45.0%) have heard about fake braces, while, 47 (10.9%) or someone they knew has utilized fake braces service. Fake braces service utilization was mainly prompted by appointment suitability (68.1%). Most of the respondents (n=363, 84.2%) were aware that braces fixing at the dental clinic were better than wearing fake braces. The majority were aware that hotels or houses are unsuitable locations for fixing dental braces (80.0%). More than half were unaware of treatment quality, other environmental and infection control difference between both services. Conclusion: Aesthetic was perceived as the main reason for getting orthodontic treatment among the respondents. Efforts should be initiated to instil sufficient knowledge on fake braces among teenagers.
