- Title
LEGISLATING IDENTITY: THE LEGACY OF THE INDIAN ACT IN ERODING ACCESS TO CARE.
- Authors
Lavoie, Josie; Forget, Evelyn L.
- Abstract
This study documents the disintegration of a system of health care financing and delivery designed to serve the needs of First Nations, based on a review of First Nation health expenditures in the province of Manitoba. Current provisions included in the Indian Act will result in increasing numbers of First Nations not eligible for registration. As a result, First Nation health organizations will find themselves obligated to serve a growing population, without corresponding funding. The implication is a potential reduction in access to primary health care for a population who already experiences considerable health inequalities.
