- Abstract
The article discusses how absence of relatives has been suggested as a potentially modifiable risk factor for delirium and anxiety in the intensive care unit (ICU). Topics discussed include ways in which flexible visitation in the ICU may contribute to prevent delirium; identification of predictors of delirium and mortality; and extended ICU visiting policy and its link to a reduction in the incidence of delirium.
