- Abstract
Gingivitis is the clinical manifestation of the periodontal tissue infl ammation due to microbial aggression at the level of juxta- and sub-gingival region. Left untreated gingivitis can lead to severe and irreversible periodontitis. Controlling the formation of supragingival plaque biofi lm plays an important role in the primary and secondary prophylaxis of periodontal diseases and it also represents one of the steps in the treatment of already developed periodontitis. The adjunct use of antimicrobial agents might be benefi cial for the control of biofi lms formed in inaccessible areas for tooth brushing such as interproximal surfaces or soft tissue niches. The aim of this article is to provide information to dentists on the latest data referring to the effi cacy of a triclosan/ copolymer toothpaste on oral health. There is moderate-quality evidence that triclosan/copolymer reduces plaque levels and gingivitis compared with controls. There is insuffi cient evidence, to show whether or not triclosan/copolymer reduces the incidence of periodontitis. The effect of triclosan/copolymer tooth paste on root caries development is reduced, but high-quality evidence shows that it reduces coronal caries. However modest the benefi ts of the triclosan/copolymer toothpaste might seem, translating them at population levels they could become an important dimension. Whatever modality to prevent or to reduce periodontal pathologies with relatively minor resources, in this case the use of a triclosan/copolymer toothpaste, could have an impressive impact on the population quality of life or on reducing overall treatment expenses.
