- Title
A Cold Case File Reopened: Was Crane's Maggie Murdered or a Suicide?
- Authors
DOWLING, ROBERT M.; PIZER, DONALD
- Abstract
The article discusses the novel "Maggie: A Girl of the Streets," by Stephen Crane. It focuses on a literary debate over whether Crane intended readers to think that the title character had been murdered, or committed suicide. In the article, two critics who hold opposite views on this issue debate the question. Each critic first presents his case without regard to that of the other. This is followed by brief rebuttals, in which each critic responds directly to the other's arguments. Differences between the 1893 and 1896 editions of the book are noted, and the tropes typical to 19th-century stories about prostitutes are addressed.
