- Abstract
Objective: This study aimed to explore the effectiveness of dance therapy as compared to relaxation therapy intervention program in improving functional balance and anxiety level among cognitively impaired elderly in institutions. Design: A quasi experimental study was carried out in two government residential homes. Material and methods: A study was conducted among 44 individuals aged 60 years and above who met the inclusion criteria of mild to moderate cognitive function as assessed using Mini Mental State Examination. Twenty-four subjects underwent Poco-Poco dance therapy (Intervention group-IG) whilst another 20 underwent relaxation therapy (Control group-CG) twice a week for 6 weeks duration. Results: intervention group showed significant decrease in scores of anxiety (p < 0.000) and depression (p < 0.000), and improved functional mobility demonstrated by Timed-Up and Go (TUG) test (p < 0.001) as compared to control group. Conclusion: Dance therapy as a form of participation-based physical exercise can improve functional balance and anxiety level among cognitively impaired elderly in institutions. There is a need to conduct such an intervention in a larger scale and longer duration.
