- Abstract
Background: Limited information is available regarding sleep medicine education worldwide. The importance of physician education in sleep and sleep disorders has only recently been recognized. It is surprising that little attention has been given to the training and education of health professionals in this area. Perhaps the most serious consequence of this problem is the high rate of misdiagnosis and maltreatment of sleep disorders by primary care physicians. Objective: This present review was designed to assess the knowledge and attitude among general practitioners regarding obstructive sleep apnea. It also emphasizes on treatment options available for physicians. Methodology: For this review, the available literature on knowledge and attitude among general practitioners regarding obstructive sleep apnea, was evaluated in the PubMed database, as well as historical articles, texts and references cited public works. Results: According to the data obtained from most of the surveys in epidemiological studies it shows that current education of general practitioners about obstructive sleep apnea is inadequate and that additional time should be devoted to this area. The major obstacles reported are the unavailability of qualified faculty, lack of curriculum time and the need for additional clinical and educational resource. Conclusion: Overall, it appears that physician education in sleep and sleep disorders is largely inadequate, despite increasing evidence of the role of sleep in patient health and well-being. There is a need for increased education and training regarding obstructive sleep apnea and oral appliances in dental school, as well as increased cooperation between dentists and physicians for better patient care.
