- Abstract
Porcelain is highly vitrified and translucent white bodied ceramic produced from kaolinite, feldspar and quartz. The coloured porcelain bodies are produced by changing white body colour of porcelain materials with pigment addition. In this study, the effect of the pigment addition on the slip and physical properties for colourless, yellow and black porcelain bodies and effect of the composition on yellow coloured body properties have been investigated. Thus, it is aimed to establish the correlation between composition and product properties when the components such as pigment, raw material etc. at industrial process was changed. Different porcelain compositions were prepared by adding yellow zircon and black iron-chromium spinel pigment into standard colourless porcelain body. Addition of the pigment in to porcelain body changes the properties of casting slips and fired porcelain properties. Yellow pigment increases the flow time of the slip from 48s to 53 s and it acts as thicker. Upon the black pigment decreases the flow time of the slip from 48 s to 40 s and pigment acts as a thinner. Because of the higher iron oxide content in the black sample, the porosity (31.93%) and water absorption value (17.92%) of black sample were slightly reduced but firing deformation (7.0 mm) value was increased. When the different amount of quartz and K and Na-feldspar added to yellow coloured body, fired body properties changes. Firing deformation increases depending on amount of the K and Na-feldspar because of the higher K2O and Na2O contents. The body containing highest K-feldspar content reached fully densification and water absorption has 0% value. In contrast, final water absorption % increased to 0.2% at body containing highest Na-feldspar.
