- Abstract
“Places explain people". This simple idea could be the point of departure in speaking of that collection of writers, essayists and painters known as the Bloomsbury Group, named after the area of London where they first used to live. Linking the lives and works with the houses and gardens they lived in is not difficult as they are strongly interrelated. Their writings and painting reflect their surroundings, and they molded their domestic spaces to their artistic beliefs. Throughout their lives they generously shared their houses and gardens with other members of the group. So it is possible to think of these special places as shared residences and the Bloomsbury Group as a loose form of cultural community. Some of these places have gone but it is still possible to visit others such as Charleston, Monk's House or Sissinghurst to experience the personal paradises they created to survive in a hostile world.
