The comparison of man's life with a bubble, homo bulla, is an old topic that can be traced back to the classical tradition. It was revitalized in the contexts of visual rhetoric and the philosophy of desengaño in 16th and 17th century Europe. The aim of the present paper is to show the history of the metaphor from text to image, along with its variants and conceptual branches, ending with its Nachleben in contemporary culture.
